LinguaQue horas são? – asking the time
To ask the time, say Que horas são? – literally “what hours are they?”. The answer uses são + the number: São duas horas, São três e dez. Only three times take the singular é: É uma hora, É meio-dia (noon) and É meia-noite (midnight). a hora is feminine, so one and two are uma and duas: uma hora, duas horas, and even vinte e uma horas for 21:00. Minutes are added with e: São quatro e vinte. Half past is e meia – half an hour – and on the hour is em ponto: São oito em ponto.

Quinze para as três – before the hour
After half past, Brazilians often count down to the next hour with para: 2:45 is São quinze para as três – “fifteen to three”. 2:50 is dez para as três. Before one o’clock, noon and midnight the article changes: cinco para a uma, dez para o meio-dia. Counting up is also correct – São duas e quarenta e cinco – but on the street you will mostly hear para. A minuto is a minute: Faltam cinco minutos.
– Que horas são? – São dez para as oito.– What time is it? – It’s ten to eight.
Às oito, à uma: at what time
“At” a time is a + the article, which melt together: às oito (a + as), às duas e meia, but à uma (a + a), ao meio-dia (a + o) and à meia-noite. The accent on à / às is spelling – it shows the article is inside. The question is A que horas…? or simply Quando…?. To avoid confusion add da manhã, da tarde or da noite: às oito da manhã, às três da tarde, às nove da noite. Timetables, tickets and official times use the 24-hour clock with h: O voo sai às 14h (catorze horas), Aberto das 9h às 18h.
– A que horas começa o filme? – Às nove da noite.– What time does the film start? – At nine in the evening.
