LinguaWelcher? – Dieser! Asking and pointing
In a shop (das Geschäft) two little words do most of the work. welcher? asks “which?”, dieser points: “this one”. Both take the endings of der, die, das: welcher Rock / dieser Rock (der), welche Jacke / diese Jacke (die), welches Hemd / dieses Hemd (das), and welche / diese in the plural. When a der-word is the object – Ich nehme … – the ending becomes -en, just like einen: diesen Pullover. The noun can even disappear: Welcher gefällt dir? – Dieser hier.

Anprobieren: does it fit?
Before you buy, you anprobieren (try on) – a separable verb: Ich probiere die Hose an. You do it in die Umkleidekabine. The shop assistant asks Welche Größe haben Sie? (die Größe = size). If the size is right, the clothes passen (fit): Die Hose passt. If not, they are zu groß or zu klein – here zu means “too”. And when something looks good on a person, German says it steht them: Das steht dir! (That suits you!), Die Farbe steht dir gut.
Kann ich die Jacke anprobieren? – Ja, die Kabine ist dort hinten.Can I try on the jacket? – Yes, the changing room is at the back there.
An der Kasse: paying and exchanging
You pay at die Kasse. The key question is short and colloquial: Geht auch Karte? (Is a card OK too?) – the alternative is bar zahlen (pay cash). In Germany cash is still more popular than in many countries, and some small shops and cafés only take cash, so the question is worth asking. If something does not fit at home, you can often umtauschen (exchange) it – keep the receipt, der Kassenbon: Kann ich den Rock umtauschen?
