LinguaIch will, ich möchte: two ways to want
wollen is a firm intention or a plan: Im Sommer will ich Deutsch lernen – I have decided. möchten is the polite, softer wish you already know from the café: Ich möchte einen Tee. For plans with friends both are fine; when you ask for something in a shop, a restaurant or an office, use möchten – Ich will … there sounds like a demand. Both work like können: the modal is second, the infinitive at the end. wollen changes its vowel in the singular (ich will, du willst, er will – no ending for ich and er); möchten keeps its vowel and has an -e with ich and er: ich möchte, sie möchte.

Darf ich …?: permission and prohibition
dürfen means to be allowed to. Darf ich hier parken? is the polite way to ask for permission. With nicht it is a prohibition: Hier darf man nicht rauchen – smoking is not allowed here. man means “one, people in general”, like the impersonal “you”; it takes the same verb form as er: man darf, man kann, man muss. On signs German often uses a verb as a noun, with a capital letter, and verboten or erlaubt: Rauchen verboten, Parken erlaubt.
