Lan è una studentessa vietnamita. Studia a Bologna e cerca casa: vuole un monolocale o un piccolo bilocale, non troppo caro. Ogni mattina legge gli annunci, e un giorno trova questo:

«Affittasi bilocale ammobiliato di cinquanta metri quadrati, al terzo piano con ascensore. Ingresso, soggiorno con angolo cottura, camera da letto, bagno e balcone. Cantina e posto auto. Spese di condominio sessanta euro al mese, riscaldamento compreso. Libero subito.»

Lan telefona al proprietario, il signor Neri. – Buongiorno, chiamo per l'annuncio. L'appartamento è ancora libero? – Sì, è libero. – Quant'è l'affitto? E le spese sono comprese? – L'affitto è di cinquecento euro al mese. Le spese sono a parte, ma il riscaldamento è compreso.

Il giorno dopo Lan va a vedere l'appartamento. Il palazzo non è in centro, è in periferia, ma la fermata dell'autobus è di fronte al condominio. Il signor Neri abita al primo piano. L'ascensore c'è, ma è piccolo, e Lan prende le scale.

Nell'ingresso c'è uno scaffale per le scarpe. Il soggiorno è luminoso: ci sono due grandi finestre e una porta sul balcone. In mezzo al soggiorno c'è un divano blu, e sopra il divano, sul muro, c'è una foto di Venezia. Non c'è una vera cucina, ma l'angolo cottura è nuovo, e accanto alla finestra ci sono un tavolo bianco e due sedie rosse.

La camera da letto è tra il soggiorno e il bagno. C'è un letto grande, c'è un armadio nero e accanto al letto c'è una lampada. Sotto il letto, dentro una scatola, Lan trova un vecchio libro. – È di un altro studente, l'inquilino di prima – dice il signor Neri.

Il bagno è piccolo e non ci sono doppi servizi, ma per una persona va bene. Fuori, sul balcone, ci sono due piante. – E la cantina? – chiede Lan. – La cantina è sotto il palazzo, e il posto auto è dietro. Ma Lei ha la macchina? – No, ho una bici rossa!

Lan è contenta. Il secondo appartamento della settimana è caro e senza finestre in cucina; questo è perfetto. La sera Lan chiama il signor Neri: affitta il bilocale. Ora la sua casa ha un indirizzo: via Mazzini 12, terzo piano.
