LinguaPai, mãe, filho, filha: family words
Most family words come in pairs: -o for a man, -a for a woman – o filho / a filha, o tio / a tia, o primo / a prima. Words in -ão make the woman’s form with -ã: o irmão / a irmã. Two pairs are different words: o pai / a mãe. And one pair differs only by the accent: o avô (grandfather, closed ô) and a avó (grandmother, open ó) – the accent is part of the spelling, so write it.

Os pais, os irmãos: a man in the group, a masculine plural
When a group has at least one man, Portuguese uses the masculine plural. So os pais is father and mother – your parents; os irmãos can be brothers and sisters together – your siblings; os filhos are children of both sexes; os tios, os primos work the same way. Grandparents are os avós – with the open ó of avó: os avós is grandfather and grandmother, while os avôs would mean only grandfathers. One trap: os parentes is not “the parents” but all your relatives.

Tenho dois irmãos: ter for family
Family is something you have, with the verb ter: tenho (I have), tem (you have, he has, she has). Você tem filhos? – Tenho, um filho. – Não tenho irmãos. Ask how many with Quantos (for masculine words) or Quantas (for feminine ones): Quantos irmãos você tem?, Quantas primas ela tem?. Numbers agree as usual: um irmão, uma irmã, dois primos, duas primas. A child without brothers or sisters is filho único or filha única.
– Quantos primos você tem? – Tenho seis, e todos moram em Recife.– How many cousins do you have? – I have six, and they all live in Recife.
