Del pane, della frutta: di + the article
To say “some” – an amount you don’t count – Italian joins di and the definite article: del pane (some bread), della frutta (some fruit), dell’acqua (some water). With a plural it means “some, a few”: dei pomodori (some tomatoes), delle mele (some apples). These are the same forms as di + article in la casa del nonno. Un po’ di (a bit of) works with anything and never changes: un po’ di formaggio, un po’ di frutta.
| di + article | Partitive | Example |
|---|---|---|
At the market I buy some bread, some cheese and some apples.
The partitive is often left out, and that is also correct: in a list (Compro pane e latte) and almost always after non (Non compro pane). So you will hear both Compro del pane and Compro pane. What you must never do is mix the forms: it is del pane (il pane), dei pomodori (i pomodori) – the article tells you which one.
Al mercato: un chilo, un etto, una fetta
After a quantity comes di alone, without an article: un chilo di pomodori (a kilo), mezzo chilo di mele (half a kilo), un etto di prosciutto (100 grams – the unit of the deli counter), una bottiglia di vino, un pacco di pasta (a packet), una scatola di biscotti (a box), una fetta di formaggio (a slice). At the market or in a small food shop, gli alimentari, the seller asks Altro? (Anything else?), and you answer No, basta così, grazie (No, that’s all, thanks).
– Due etti di prosciutto, per favore. – Ecco a Lei. Altro? – No, basta così.– Two hundred grams of ham, please. – Here you are. Anything else? – No, that’s all.
