At the restaurant: antipasto, primo, secondo

A meal in courses

A full Italian meal comes in order. L’antipasto (the starter) opens it. Il primo (the first course) is pasta, rice or soup – la minestra. Il secondo (the main course) is la carne (meat) or il pesce (fish), with il contorno (a side dish) such as l’insalata (salad) or le patate (potatoes). Then il dolce (dessert) or fruit, and un caffè. Nobody orders everything every day: a primo alone, or a secondo with a contorno, is a normal lunch.

Booking, ordering and saying what you like

On the phone you prenotare (book) a table; at the door you ask Avete un tavolo per due? If you can’t choose, ask the waiter Che cosa mi consiglia? (What do you recommend?). Order course by course: Per primo prendo …, per secondo … For likes, learn two chunks: mi piace + one thing (Mi piace la carne) and mi piacciono + several things (Mi piacciono le patate); with non in front you don’t like it.

Per primo prendo il risotto, per secondo la carne con le patate. For my first course I’ll have the risotto, and for the main course the meat with potatoes.

At the end you say Il conto, per favore (The bill, please). On the bill you may find il coperto, a small charge per person for bread and the table setting. La mancia (the tip) is not obligatory in Italy: leaving a few coins when you were happy is a kind gesture, not a rule.
