Places in the city: tem, fica, no, na

A farmácia, o banco, o mercado: places in a Brazilian city

PlaceWhat you do there
a farmáciabuy medicine, shampoo, toothpaste
o bancotake out money, pay bills
o mercadobuy food for the house
o correiosend a letter or a parcel
a bancabuy a newspaper, a magazine, a bottle of water
o shoppingshop, eat, go to the cinema
o ponto de ônibuswait for the bus

“In” a place is em, and em melts with the article: em + o = no, em + a = na, em + os = nos, em + as = nas. So you never say em o banco: it is no banco, na farmácia, nos shoppings, nas ruas. With um and uma it melts too: num bairro, numa praça (em um, em uma are also fine). Cities take plain em: em Recife, em São Paulo – except o Rio: no Rio.

Tem uma farmácia aqui perto?: tem for “there is”

To say that something exists somewhere, Brazilians use tem – the same word as “has”, and it never changes: Tem um banco na praça. – Tem duas padarias na minha rua. A question is the same sentence with a question tone: Tem um mercado aqui perto? The short answer repeats the verb: Tem. or Não tem. In writing and formal speech you will also see há (Há uma farmácia no shopping): both are correct, tem is what you hear every day.

– Tem um mercado aqui perto? – Tem, na próxima rua.– Is there a grocery shop near here? – Yes, on the next street.

For where a building or a place is, Portuguese uses ficar: O correio fica no centro. – Onde ficam os bancos? (plural: ficam). Add distance with perto (near) and longe (far). Before a place they take de, and de melts with the article too: perto do metrô, longe da praia, perto daqui (de + aqui). Alone they need nothing: É perto? – Não, é longe.
