LinguaVou, vai, vamos, vão: two irregular verbs of movement

Where to? Portuguese says ir a or ir para, and a melts with the article: a + o = ao, a + a = à (with a grave accent), a + os = aos, a + as = às. So: Vou ao banco. – Vou à farmácia. In Brazilian speech para is more frequent and gets short: para o = pro, para a = pra: Vou pro trabalho, Vou pra casa. Home is just casa, without an article: Vou para casa. You will also hear Vou no mercado in casual speech; in writing, use a or para.

De ônibus, de metrô, a pé: how you get there
Transport takes de with no article: de ônibus, de metrô, de carro, de táxi, de bicicleta, de moto, de trem. The exception is walking: a pé. The everyday verb for catching transport is pegar: Pego o ônibus às sete. Vir is movement towards the speaker – Você vem à festa? – and voltar is coming back: Volto de táxi.

– Você vem de carro? – Não, venho de ônibus.– Are you coming by car? – No, I’m coming by bus.
