Ask yourself: is this what it is, or how it is right now? The first is ser, the second estar. Many adjectives go with both, and the verb changes the meaning: A Ana é bonita – she is a beautiful person; A Ana está bonita hoje – she looks lovely today. O filme é chato – the film is boring; O Leo está chato hoje – Leo is being annoying today.

Events with ser, places with ficar
Where and when an event takes place is ser: A festa é no sábado. A reunião é na sala 5. Where a person or a movable thing is at the moment is estar: O livro está na mesa. Where a building or a city is – something that never moves – Brazilians most often say ficar: O banco fica no centro. Onde fica o hotel?
O show é no sábado, e o teatro fica perto da praia.The concert is on Saturday, and the theatre is near the beach.
Words that live with estar
Some adjectives describe a result or a moment and go with estar: pronto (ready) – Estou pronto!, never sou pronto; aberto and fechado – A loja está aberta; and the temperature of things – O café está quente, A água está fria.
O jantar está pronto, mas a padaria já está fechada.Dinner is ready, but the bakery is already closed.
