In Brazilian speech esse does the work of both este and esse: Esse livro aqui é meu (the book in my hand). Este lives mainly in writing (este texto, este ano). Aquele always means far: aquele prédio lá. The adverb often goes with the demonstrative to make the distance clear: esse aqui, essa aí, aquele ali.
Esse quadro aqui é da minha avó.This painting here belongs to my grandmother.
Isto, isso, aquilo
When you don’t name the thing, use the neutral forms: O que é isso? Aquilo lá é uma igreja. They never stand before a noun: say esse livro, never “isso livro”. Isso also comments on what someone just said: Isso! (exactly!), Isso é verdade.
Neste, desse, naquele
em and de merge with the demonstratives just like with the article: em + este = neste, em + esse = nesse, em + aquele = naquele; de + este = deste, de + esse = desse, de + aquele = daquele. Feminine and neutral too: nessa, daquela, disso, naquilo.
Eu trabalho naquela loja da esquina.I work in that shop on the corner.
